This is the first mosque in India. Situated in Methala, Kodungalloor, hardly 20 kilometers from the Irinjalakuda railway station. Legend says King Cheraman Perumal of Kodungallor left for Mecca, embraced Islam, accepted the name Thajudee, married the sister of the then King of Jeddah. Before his death Thajuddeen handed over to the King of Jeddah several letters addressed to Kerala Kings seeking their help to propagate Islam. The Jeddah king came to Kerala and met the then king of Kodungalloor who helped the former convert Arathali temple into a Juma Masjid. This mosque was designed and constructed based on Hindu art and architecture. It was built in 629 A.D. and resembles like a temple in appearance. It is situated in Kodungaloor.
Ottapalam Nercha is an annual festival celebrated at Ottapalam Juma Masjid, where the mortal remains of Saint Uthman Auliya, a revered man in Muslim community, is entombed. It is held in the month of January-February to commemorate the death anniversary of the saint.
The special feature of this festival is a grand procession bringing ceremoniously various articles such as rice and coconut to the masjid. Next day, a grand feast is held where the various articles from the procession offerings are cooked and distributed to the poor. Ottapalam Juma Masjid is situated in Ottapalam, which is about 40 km west of Palakkad, in Kerala.
This is a 280 year old mosque that was built by a Hindu family. The story of the mosque goes that the Hindu Prana Nambi family, once, usurped the belongings of the Muslims. Thereafter, they were afflicted with a deadly disease. To correct its misdeeds, the family built a mosque, which we today know as the Jamaat Mosque. Women are not permitted inside the mosque which has now become a sort of pilgrim centre for the Muslims. Close to the mosque is a mausoleum dedicated to the shaheeds of the Malappuram who laid down their lives in the Mopilla revolt.
Pazhayangadi Mosque, a prominent pilgrim centre of the Muslims, is located 18 km east of Manjeri on the way to Malappuram. The mosque is situated at Kondotty on the Malappuram- Kozhikode route. Also known as Kondotty mosque, it is associated with the Muslim Saint Muhammed Shah, popularly known as Kondotty Thangal.
The 'Valia Nercha' festival at this 500-year-old mosque is celebrated for three days in February-March. It is an important festival that draws large number of devotees.
