The capital of the state of Kerala, Trivandrum or the City of the Sacred Snake, is built over seven hills. Named after Anantha.Thiru-v-anantha-puram is a three sylable name meaning the abode of the sacred snake god "Anantha". Lord Vishnu of the ancient Indian mytholgy rests on this huge serpent. This city and district are also popularly known by its anglicised name Trivandrum .Thiruvananthapuram derives its name from the deity at the Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple, which is the most recognisable icon of the city, nearly 2000 years old. The city has grown as a tourist and commercial centre, with the International airport becoming the main gateway into Kerala.

The northern most district of Kerala, Kasaragod is situated on the sea coast bordered by hilly Kodagu and Mangalore districts of Karnataka in the east and north.Kasaragod was famous from time immemorial and Arab travelers who came to Kerala in 9th and 14th centuries AD had visited Kasaragod. The Bekal fort, which is of great historical and archaeological interest, is the largest and best preserved of its kind in the district and the land on which it is situated, runs into the sea with fine bay towards the south.
